Did you start work in 2024? Claim your tax refund!

If you started your first job in Luxembourg in 2024, you may have paid too much tax. Find out how to claim a refund using the annual tax statement.

Did you start your first job in 2024? You could get some tax back!

Have you joined the world of work in Luxembourg this year? Congratulations! But did you know that you probably paid more tax than you needed to? Many young employees don't realise it: when you start work during the year, it's often possible to reclaim some of the tax you've paid. We explain why - and how - in this article.

Why is a refund possible?

In Luxembourg, tax is deducted directly by your employer each month on the basis of an annual estimate of your income. The system assumes that you have worked throughout the calendar year. But if you started working during the year - in June or September, for example - the total amount deducted at source does not reflect your actual income for the year. As a result, you may have paid too much tax.

This applies in particular to:

  • young graduates who found their first job in 2024,
  • employees who arrived from abroad during the year,
  • people who were unemployed or on work experience before being taken on.

How do you obtain this refund?

All you have to do is submit a simplified declaration called an annual statement to the Tax Department. It's quick and easy, and you can do it online, for example using taxx.lu.

When can you apply?

You have until 31 December 2025 to send in your annual statement for 2024. But the earlier you do so, the sooner you will receive your refund.

Good to know

This annual statement is not compulsory, but it is strongly recommended if you have worked for less than 12 months or if your tax situation is unusual. In many cases, this can represent a refund of several hundred euros.
