New to Luxembourg's job market in 2024? You could get hundreds of Euros back!
Have you joined the workforce in Luxembourg last year? Congratulations! But did you know that you likely paid more income tax than necessary? Many new employees don't realize this: when you start work partway through the year, you can often reclaim a significant portion of the tax you've paid. We'll explain exactly why this happens, and show you how to claim your refund, in this guide.
How is a Luxembourg tax refund possible?
In Luxembourg, tax is deducted directly by your employer each month on the basis of an annual estimate of your income. The system assumes that you have worked throughout the calendar year. But if you started working during the year, in June or September, for example, the total amount deducted at source does not reflect your actual income for the year. As a result, you may have paid too much tax.
This situation applies in particular to:
-
Recent graduates who found their first job in Luxembourg in 2024
-
Employees who arrived from abroad during the year
-
People who were unemployed or on work experience before being taken on
How do you claim this tax refund in Luxembourg?
All you have to do is submit a simplified declaration called an annual statement (form 163) to the Luxembourg tax administration. It's quick and easy, and you can do it online, for example using taxx.lu.
When can you apply for this tax refund?
You have until 31 December 2025 to submit your annual statement for 2024. But the earlier you do so, the sooner you will receive your refund.
Good to know
This annual statement is not compulsory, but it is strongly recommended if you have worked for less than 12 months or if your tax situation is unusual. In many cases, this can represent a refund of several hundred euros.
